The CWI in the CIS
The CWI is organised in Russia, the Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Moldovia with comrades in nearly 20 cities.
In Russia we call ourselves Sotsialisticheskoye Soprotivleniye (Socialist Resistance). In Ukraine our organization is called Robitnichi Sprotiv (Workers' Resistance). We publish an all CIS paper with separate pages for each of the countries called Levii Avanguard (Left Vanguard). The paper is distributed in over 40 cities.
Unlike most activists in the Communist Parties of the CIS, the CWI comrades are overwhelmingly young, but that does not reduce their influence. In our ranks we have comrades who have organized strikes, formed trade unions, led campaigns against the war in Chechnya and so on. In Russia, we have played a leading role in the anti-globalisation movement, in Kazakhstan, led campaigns in defense of workers rights and in the Ukraine over issues such as free education in the Crimea and the rights of workers to cheap hostels in the West Ukraine.
The biggest branches of the CWI are in Kiev (Ukraine), Moscow, Saratov and Voronezh (Russia), Beltsi (Moldova), Almata, Zhambul and Uralsk (Kazakhstan). But it also has comrades and groups working in the Russian cities of St Petersburg, Vorkuta, Syvtykar, Novosibirsk, Yaroslavl, Niznii Novgorod and Tyumen. It organizes in the West (Lvov, Rivno, Lutsk) and East Ukraine (Dneproderzhinsk, Lugansk) as well as Odessa and the Crimea. In Kazakhstan there are comrades in Alma-Ata and in the Karaganda coal field as well as Ust Kamenogorsk.
A central part of the CWI's programme in these countries is the establishment of workers' parties on a socialist programme, but we present ourselves as an organization for all those workers and youth who want to join a socialist, revolutionary alternative which fights the effects of capitalist restoration. Throughout the region where there are huge complications caused by the effects of Stalinism and the national question, we work with all who are prepared to assist the working class in their struggle. Comrades throughout the CIS are active in campaigns against racism and fascism, political repression, attacks on the environment and in defence of women's rights.
