Copenhagen climate summit

People’s Climate Summit

Great response to socialist ideas

Lina Westerlund and Mattias Bernhardsson, Rattvisepartiet Socialisterna (CWI in Sweden)

On Monday 7 December, the ‘People’s’ Climate Summit’ started in Copenhagen, Denmark. Members of Rattvisepartiet Socialisterna (CWI Sweden) arrived on Friday, with material in Danish, Swedish and English putting forward a socialist programme in response to the climate crisis.

The People’s Climate Summit is organised by 95 organisations internationally, as an alternative to the UN summit’s empty echoing of big business’ false climate solutions.

On Thursday, the CWI is organising a public meeting titled, ”Save the planet - fight capitalism”, at 4pm in InfoPoint Rad.huset, Onkel Dannys Plads. The meeting will discuss the socialist solutions needed, for example; massive public investment in renewable energy, collective public transport, housing and agriculture; the need for the transformation of industry under workers’ control; the nationalisation of big companies and the need for economic planning.

This week, CWI members from Sweden will also hold discussions on the issue of climate change in Copenhagen.

On 5-6 December, there was also an international youth conference, COY, with hundreds of participants. Our demands for climate justice - that big business, and not the international working class and poor, should pay for the climate crisis - received an overwhelming response, including the demand for nationalisation of the multinationals.

In the first three days, we have sold 77 copies of our Swedish weekly paper and 101 copies of an English translation of our document on climate change. We are also in contact with new people interested in further discussions about the CWI.

Here are some tips about coming events at the People’s Climate Summit:
