From the age of 10 years to their ripe old age, we find women not only
slaving in their homes but also working in the houses of the wealthy &
the middle classes as the only other means for their livelihood.
The garment industry in Bangalore with about 1200 registered units
employing over a half a million workforce and one of the biggest sources
of exports in the country, but hardly is there any mention in the media
on the living and working conditions of the workers who are the real
makers of some of the top brand clothing...
As we reported last week, the general strike of 7 September in India was
called by a wide range of trade unions. It was in protests at the
rocketing prices of food and fuel while wages stagnate and hours and
jobs are cut.
