The Council of Europe accused 14 member states of "intentional or grossly negligent collusion" in allowing the US to set up "a global spiders’ web of secret detentions and unlawful inter-state transfers" of supposed "terrorism suspects".
Ireland is among countries named in the Committee on Legal Affairs and Human Rights report, published yesterday. Ireland was accused of "negligent collusion" for allowing Shannon airport to be used as a stopover for CIA flights on "rendition" operations.
The following is a press release on the issue by Joe Higgins TD, Socialist Party (CWI) member of the Irish parliament for Dublin West.

Shannon airport condemned for collusion in CIA ’rendition’ flights
Press Statement – 7th June 2006
Report on CIA "Rendition" Flights:
Government must explain why it has consistently rejected calls for US Military and CIA- chartered flights landing at our airports to be searched
Joe Higgins T.D. The Socialist Party
The Council of Europe Report states that Ireland, along with other European countries, could be held responsible for colluding with the CIA by allowing its airports to be used for secret "rendition" flights.
The Irish Government must now explain why it has consistently rejected calls for US Military and CIA- chartered flights landing at our airports to be searched for illegally detained prisoners and weapons.
Following this report no CIA- chartered aircraft should be allowed to use any airport in this State.
Also with the disaster that is the US/ British occupation of Iraq unfolding daily, the Irish Government should immediately withdraw facilities for the U.S. Military at Shannon Airport.
