CWI: Peter Hadden’s writings online at Marxist Internet Archive

Socialist writings on Ireland and the national question

Peter Hadden, who served for many years on the Socialist Party (CWI in Ireland) National Executive Committee and held the post of Northern Secretary, as well as on the CWI’s International Executive Committee, sadly died last May (see obituaries: here and here).

2011 sees the welcome development of Peter’s many articles and pamphlets being posted on the Marxists Internet Archive (MIA – www.marxists.org) a widely-read site which makes accessible the works of a large variety of Marxist writings.

Over four decades, Peter Hadden and the comrades in the North of Ireland campaigned for workers’ unity and a socialist alternative, developed a Marxist analysis of the conflict and the national question and elaborated socialist demands, policies and programme.

Peter’s pamphlets and articles, which mainly deal with Ireland but also regarding international and other political issues, will appear regularly on MIA over the next months. They are taken from the pages of the Irish Socialist Party’s past and current journals (Militant Irish Monthly, Militant, Socialist Voice and The Socialist), from other CWI publications and also from the Socialist Party’s website and other CWI sites. To date, the pamphlets, Divide and Rule (1980), Beyond the Troubles? (1994), Troubled Times: The National Question in Ireland (1995), The Struggle for Socialism Today (1999) and Towards Division Not Peace (1999) are some of the writings now available online.

The archive shows the consistent principled class postion regarding Ireland and the national question that has been developed and defended by the Socialist Party and the entire CWI. The archive is not just of historical interest but is very relevant to workers, youth and socialists in Ireland, and internationally, struggling to change society today.
