Sri Lanka: United Socialists celebrate the legacy of Trotsky

Memorial meeting remembers the great revolutionary who died in August 1940

The killing of life-long revolutionary Leon Trotsky was remembered in Sri Lanka this week. 72 years ago on 21 August 1940, Trotsky was attacked by a Stalinist agent who had infiltrated his household in Mexico City. The great revolutionary died the following day.

The commemoration in Colombo was held on Tuesday 21 August in the Public Library Services auditorium. The keynote speech was given by T. Andradi, the translator of Trotsky’s autobiography, ’My Life’, into the Sinhala language. Siritunga Jayasuriya, General Secretary of the United Socialist Party also spoke at the meeting which was chaired by Srinath Perera.

In the new period of crisis for capitalism worldwide, more and more people have begun to read the writings of Marx and Trotsky. Trotsky’s analysis of the Stalinist regime in the USSR and the idea of ’Permanent Revolution’ have armed the struggling working class and youth for generations. More and more workers and young people are finding these ideas useful in understanding the development of events and fighting in the coming period to get rid of capitalism and all its evils.
