The United Socialist Party’s May Day demonstration passed successfully through a number of populous areas of Colombo, ending at Grand Pass Junction.
The theme of the traditional socialist May Day rally of the USP(United Socialist Party) was ‘Against capitalism and communalism’. This year marks one of the most successful May Day demonstrations the USP had in the past decade.
Most importantly, Tamil and Muslim comrades attended it – coming from as far away as Jaffna, Trincomalee and Ampara, along with Tamil plantation worker-comrades from Nuwaraeliya and Kandapola. Other USP branches were represented – from Polonnaruwa, Wellawaya, Deraniyagala, Panadura, Horana, Matugama, Elpitiya and Eheliyagoda.
After many years, almost all the opposition trade unions have come together for a struggle. It is against the huge Electricity price hike starting this month May. They have announced the holding of a joint token strike on 21st of May.
The USP appealed in the May Day rally to all unions to support this action against this most corrupt and family-dominated Rajapaksa regime. Also the USP has said that unions should appeal to all consumers to start a campaign to not pay the increase on electricity bills.
Speakers at the rally were:- USP General Secretary, Siritunga Jayasuriya, Dhammika de Silva, Srinatha Perera, Santhan Sathyakeerth (Jaffna), H.M. Zarroq (from the East) and M. Chandiran (Nuwaraeliya).
