The Partido Obrero (PO – Workers’ Party) of Argentina stands in solidarity with the campaign for the release of hundreds of demonstrators detained in Nigeria, particularly in the days of last August, in the protest marches called #EndBadGovernance. We denounce the staging of processes that pre-announce false trials to condemn the militants of the social protests against the rise in the cost of living, widespread poverty, government corruption and the repression of the people who protest.
The false accusations by President Bola Tinubu’s government range “from treason, which carries the death penalty, to accusations of a ‘plot to destabilise Nigeria’, show the extent to which Nigerian authorities can manipulate the criminal justice system to silence critical voices. These are blatantly false charges that must be dropped immediately.”
A similar situation has been developing in Argentina: on June 12, in the context of a brutal repression against a demonstration in front of Parliament to oppose the anti-worker and reactionary Basic Law, he arbitrarily arrested 32 comrades. Accusing them of being “terrorists” and of “attempted coup d’état”. The popular mobilization finally achieved that, only a few days ago, the last of the detainees had to be released, demonstrating the falseness of the accusations of the repressive right-wing government and the subordination of “justice” to it. Although, several processes continue. As well as the raids and trials against the Polo Obrero and its leaders, with false accusations.
We unconditionally support the demand for the cessation of persecution, for the release of political detainees and for participating in marches and protest actions, particularly of the comrades of the “Campaign for the Rights of Youth (YRC)”.
