India: State repression of the Kudankulam fighters condemned

Solidarity Protest in Bangalore against Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant

On 20th March more than a hundred people gathered in front of Town Hall, Bangalore (popular protest point) in solidarity with the ongoing struggle against Koodankulam Nuclear Power Plant. Condemning the latest decision of the Tamil Nadu government (in connivance with the Central government) in giving the green signal for commissioning the plant, the protesters demanded its immediate withdrawal.

The Tamil Nadu government has caused a great injustice to the people living around Koodankulam plant by giving a go ahead for the commissioning of the plant. Large number of police have been deployed around the area and have started to crackdown on the protesters who have been peacefully opposing the Nuclear power plant.

Until now the police personnel have arrested more than 200 people including 11 prominent activists from the movement on the charges of sedition. Dr. S P Udaykumar – convener People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) and other senior activists like Pushparayan are on indefinite fast and have been joined by 20,000 other people from in and around the villages.

But the police blockade in Indinthakarai have reached an extreme point as water, food and other emergency supplies has been cut off. Fishermen trying to reach the protest point by sea have been blocked by the coast guards and air-force personnel. Electricity has been disconnected in the entire area.
