The kidnapping of Venezuelan president Nicholás Maduro and first lady Celia Flores on 3 January 2026 has again placed Venezuela at the centre of world events. For more than a quarter of a century Venezuela has been a headache for US imperialism. Over the past twenty-six years a revolutionary process has ebbed and flowed in the country. The Venezuelan masses have in that time repeatedly pushed towards a decisive rupture with US imperialism and capitalism. Especially under Maduro’s predecessor, Hugo Chávez, the regime stood on the shoulders of the Venezuelan working class and poor.
Venezuela’s ‘Bolivarian’ revolution is the subject of the articles collected in this book, written as events unfolded. We believe that the material gathered here has stood the test of time and has a new relevance. The regional left-populist ‘pink tide’ in Latin America in this period was an anticipation of the ‘era of populism’ that capitalism is passing through today on a global scale, and which now touches every continent in one form or another. An analysis of Chávez’s radical left nationalist populist Bolivarian regime is therefore rich in lessons for today.
