Reading the Communist Manifesto

LESSON SEVEN: The role of the ‘State’ in capitalist society

This lesson expands on just two sentences – very important ones! – from Chapter One of the Communist Manifesto - ‘Bourgeois and Proletarians 14’. In them, Marx and Engels summarise the role of the capitalist State as being “but a committee for managing the common affairs of the whole bourgeoisie”.

These lines are taken from the same part of the Manifesto’s first chapter 14 as in the previous lesson:

“[From] an oppressed class under the sway of the feudal nobility … the bourgeoisie has at last, since the establishment of Modern Industry and of the world market, conquered for itself, in the modern representative State, exclusive political sway.

The executive of the modern state is but a committee for managing the common affairs of the whole bourgeoisie”.
